Jason Benjamin described his art as experiential. Stripped back yet emotionally resonant, his atmospheric landscapes were never simply depictions of place, but meditations on memory, solitude and the human condition. Eschewing literal description, Benjamin used the landscape as a vessel for contemplation, imbuing even the quietest scenes with a profound emotional presence.

In 'Taking our tears away', an expansive landscape unfolds beneath the soft light of morning. The scene evokes the restorative power of nature, suggesting a place of reflection, renewal and quiet resilience. With only the trees for company, the landscape becomes both sanctuary and solace; a gentle reminder of the healing found in open space and silence.

Benjamin's work is represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia, as well as numerous regional, university and corporate collections. During his lifetime he was a multiple finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Doug Moran Prizes, and in 2005 was awarded the Archibald Prize's Packing Room Prize. Following his passing, Benjamin's work has assumed even greater significance, with collectors increasingly recognising the enduring emotional depth and sensitivity that define his remarkable contribution to contemporary Australian art.
