Auguste Blackman, son of Charles Blackman, carries on his father’s legacy with the fantastical ‘Bunny and Alice with Tea’. He pictures Alice and the White Rabbit merging, a cacophony of flowers and a floating tea set surrounding them. This work is as much an ode to Alice in Wonderland as it is to Auguste’s childhood. He reflects:

"Alice and her best friend the rabbit reminisce about all their adventures and the best thing is they survived it all together."

Originally conceived as a standalone painting depicting Alice and flowers, Auguste has since been compelled to turn it into a series; "it appears this series is talking to me and insisting on emotional support."

Cast in a complex and personal light, this Alice is an homage to Charles Blackman’s legacy, the wonder of a childlike eye and dualities. Whether reflecting on the experience of growing up among artists, or demonstrating a born passion for painting, Auguste remains a dynamic and rich voice in Australian art.

‘Bunny and Alice with Tea’ is for collectors of the Blackmans and admirers of Alice in Wonderland.
