According to myth, the minotaur symbolises the meeting of opposites: the feminine and masculine; creature and human; rational and irrational; spiritual and instinctual; and, good and evil. This duality underlies Auguste Blackman’s images of minotaurs, who despite their beastliness, feel human.
In the striking ‘Memory’, a wine-toned minotaur clasps a bouquet of flowers. His face is reticent, beholden to some memory we cannot share in. Like stars across the night sky, flowers pepper the background – symbols of beauty, mortality and wishes.
Poetry on canvas, ‘Memory’ is a compelling entry in Auguste’s long standing interest in mythology. It is recognisably by the artist, an unexpected and disarming expressionist portrait. For collectors of Auguste, the Blackmans and expressionist art, it will delight.
