Cats wander throughout Charles Blackman’s work. Sometimes they are caught in the garden, on a tin roof or silhouetted against the night sky – enigmatic, noble and watchful. Art historians have speculated that this cat is reflective of Blackman’s penchant for solitude and his experience of loneliness.
In the rare and highly collectable ‘A cat’s tale’, Blackman draws a swirl of cat, flower and woman. The effect is hypnotic. It’s hard to distinguish where feline and face begin, with both elongated into evocations of poetry. Blackman’s punny use of tale is another nod to story - what do you read in this annular prose? What happens when a knight is turned into a cat?
Blackman stands among Australia's most beloved and collectable artists. With a career as distinct as it is diverse, his work is consistently informed by a sense of childlike wonder. From 1976 and with an impression represented at the National Gallery of Australia, ‘The cat’s tale’ is a compelling find for collectors of early Blackman, prints and feline art.
