From the Blackman family’s private collection, ‘Bather’ is an expression of homecoming. Created in 1972, shortly after the Blackmans returned from living in London, it’s a celebration of the Australian sun. Glowering English skies were replaced with sun and sand.
Throughout this period, the Blackmans made numerous trips to Noosa and Bondi — rewriting, as Charles’s son Auguste recalls, his father’s “happiness”. They danced to ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and trundled to the beach in yellow taxis. Indeed, this felicitous time informed some of Blackman’s strongest work. Critic Alan McCulloch wrote glowingly of the artist’s figuration of the swimmer.
Leaning towards Blackman’s larger paintings on the same era, this elegant sketch is an ode to the great Australian pastime: swimming. Drowsy beneath the sun, his figures are bulbous and beautiful, embodiments of rest after a long journey.
For collectors of Modern art, important works on paper and Blackman catch this collectable before it drifts away.
