Charles Blackman 'Call Girl'

Throughout his career, Charles Blackman was recurrently interested in those overlooked by society. In the so-thought benign population of school children, he saw a metaphor for the sublimation of a deep unease beneath cultural innocence.

In ‘Call Girl’, Blackman turns his attention to a young woman. She is all dolled up, yet does not seem frivolous. There is tension between her outward appearance and demeanour, reminiscent of the gap between our internal and external realities.

Blackman’s portrait of a sex worker is considered, devoid of any luridness. He treats his subject as both sculptural and someone with a rich inner life. She is in command of our attention. For collectors of portraits and Blackman, ‘Call Girl’ is a beautiful find.
