In this drawing, Charles Blackman pays homage to the Olympian god of herds and flocks, travelers, trade, diplomacy, language and writing, astronomy and more. On top of this already swelling caseload, Hermes guided deceased souls in the underworld and was Zeus’s herald and personal messenger.
In Blackman’s ode, Hermes is depicted in a state of bliss. A flower erupts from his core, perhaps the crocus flower, Hermes’s sacred flower. Blackman has included the God’s winged boots, flapping in the breeze.
Blackman’s Hermes is a North Star, a twinkle to his lifelong adoration for storytelling and myth. From the artist’s personal archives and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Charles Blackman Foundation, this work is your divine companion for all things travel, trade, writing, astronomy and more.
