Charles Blackman’s life drawing of a kneeling nude is inscribed with “Drawn in the presence of John Olsen” in Olsen’s hand. Can paper bear witness to friendship? Both an elegant nude and a document of creative union, this work appears to be a collaboration – Blackman on the body and perhaps Olsen executing his characteristically bulbous head? Their lines are limber, moving together with easy confidence.
Charles son Auguste writes: 'John Olsen opened the Bakery Art School in Paddington St.
Charles used to visit the school and join in the life drawing classes. This would have been where the drawing was made in John"s presence. The courtyard lunches were lively and invigorating to say the least. John was a natural teacher and his mates used to drop in much to the delight of the students".
Both Blackman and Olsen are icons of Australian art, peers who were united by charisma, figuration and friendship. This drawing comes from Blackman’s archives, is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Charles Blackman Foundation.
For collectors of nudes and modernism, “Drawn in the presence of John Olsen” is a wonderful find.
