Charles Blackman’s 'Midsummer Masque' reimagines a union from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In it, Titania, Queen of the Fairies is bewitched by her husband, Oberon, to fall in love with a peasant, Nick Bottom, who in turn is under a spell which has transformed his head into that of an ass.

Despite being the impetus for much of the play’s drama, Blackman’s rendition is as peaceful as the storm’s eye. Titania, wearing a mask, nestles into Bottom’s shoulder. There is a sweetness here, cut with distant threat; this is Blackman as a masterful storyteller.

Represented in all public collections, Blackman’s vision continues to delight and inspire viewers. For fans of the artist, Shakespeare or unexpected soulmates, 'Midsummer Masque' is a spellbinding find.
