Charles Blackman’s ‘Repast’ is an image of blue elegance. Pictured from above, a figure dines at a checkerboard table, his spoon at the lip of an empty bowl. While Blackman was best known for his figuration, his compositions often drifted towards abstraction, using pattern and flattening to question our sense of reality and reveal emotional undercurrents.

Like his famed window motif, the checkerboard table in ‘The Repast’ is an attempt to ascribe order – the grid – to a chaotic world. The palette, shifting from deep to light blues, evokes serenity and loneliness, a meal eaten alone or in peace. Named for a feast, this hand-signed fine art archival print is a nourishing addition to collections of Blackman, still lifes and iconic Australian art.
