Charles Blackman’s ‘Titania + Bottom’ continues a rich cultural tradition. Like Henry Fuseli’s iconic 1790 painting of the same name, it depicts a scene from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In it, Titania, Queen of the Fairies is bewitched by her husband to fall in love with a peasant, Nick Bottom, who in turn is under a spell which has transformed his head into that of an ass.

Despite being the impetus for much of the play’s drama, Blackman’s rendition is peaceful. Here, Titania and Bottom are genuine lovers, clasped together in a sweet embrace.

Represented in all public collections, Blackman’s vision continues to delight and inspire viewers. For fans of the artist, Shakespeare or unexpected soulmates, ‘Titania + Bottom’ is a spellbinding find.
