This work tells the story of Titania and Bottom from Shakespeare’s play, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In Shakespeare’s telling, Titania, Queen of the Fairies is bewitched by her husband, Oberon, to fall in love with a peasant, Nick Bottom whose head has been transmogrified into an ass.
Charles Blackman’s version is tender. Titania is caught in a lover’s conversation, private and dreamy. There is a sweetness here, cut with distant threat; this is Blackman as a masterful storyteller.
Represented in all public collections, Blackman’s vision continues to delight and inspire viewers. For fans of the artist, Shakespeare or unexpected soulmates, this work will enchant.
