Susannah Bond is a Melbourne-based artist who is best known for her textural still life paintings. With a practice inspired by 20th Century French painters Nicolas de Stael and Bernard Cathelin, Bond uses oil paint and cold wax to create vibrantly coloured and harmoniously layered scenes. Bond often evokes a sense of nostalgia through her composed moments of still observation.
In her 2025 oil painting 'Bunch of Secrets', Bond presents a classic still life of a vase of deep red flowers. Rendered in thick, gestural brushstrokes, the surface is richly textured. Drawing inspiration from the French artist Bernard Cathelin, Bond often builds her floral still lifes through successive layers of oil paint. The resulting composition is loosely detailed yet deeply evocative, imbued with a moody, emotional atmosphere - a single red flower slipping from the bunch, caught mid-fall.
Since returning to her painting practice in 2010, Bond has been selected for Artist of the Year three years in a row at the Victorian Artists Society, and her works have been featured in the Art Edit Magazine, Home Beautiful and Grand Design magazines. For lovers of contemporary Australian art, Bond’s paintings are a joy to discover.
