Mairka Borlase’s infatuation with the landscape started as a child, journeying from inner Melbourne to her family’s miners cottage at Campbells Creek. At age nine she created her first ‘plein air’ painting, sparking a devotion to art.
Her work draws on cultural and personal memory. She is interested in how colonial artists supplanted European traditions onto the Australian landscape, creating hybrid spaces. Yet, her work is still personal – hazy moments that evoke a dreaminess, memories of a childhood spent in the bush. Each work is a negotiation between the artist, studio and outside world.
‘Untitled’ is a warm, intricate window into nature. It seems from another era – campsites scattered across a golden topography. As Borlase reflects, “My works are the result of a lifelong curiosity of the natural world that surrounds me.”
For collectors of landscapes, ‘Untitled’ is a bewitching find.
