Eolo Paul Bottaro is an Sicilian-Australian artist. He has been dubbed the “Renaissance man” for his devotion to Renaissance techniques and figuratism. Indeed, in ‘Tango at the Shrine’ he evokes the eighteenth century technique chiaroscuro. Despite its faithfulness to Renaissance techniques, the themes underlying ‘Tango at the Shrine’ are modern. Set at Melbourne’s ‘Shrine for Remembrance’, it pictures two figures dancing by firelight. The immense losses endured through World World II are distilled into a strange moment of pathos; a final dance before the fire dies.
Stirring, thematically complex and technically proficient, ‘Tango at the Shrine’ is an atmospheric find. It reaches back into history while considering processes of remembrance, offering a unique find for collectors of prints and contemporary art.
