David Boyd is one of Australia’s most celebrated modernist artists. Working alongside his fellow artist brother, Boyd was following a strong figurative tradition within Melbourne in the mid 20th century. Boyd was part of the Antipodean movement, a group that was created by artists in the quest to forge meaning and representation during a time that abstract expressionism was gaining popularity.

From the late 1970’s, Boyd’s family moved to inner Sydney and the cockatoos became the subject of Boyd’s later paintings such as 'Bathers and Cockatoos'. The scene depicts a lone nude female bather (Europa) joyously splashing around while a cockatoo appears to dive near the water. Inspired by his 'Europa and Cockatoo' series from the 90’s, Boyd is notorious for his continual use of Greek mythological princesses interacting with Australian wildlife, particularly cockatoos. There is an afternoon light that falls on the bed of the lake behind the bather, which is surrounded by Australian bushland, which Boyd emphasises in his work.

A joyous addition for collections of Australian modernist art, lovers of prints, and appreciators of the Boyd artistic legacy.
