David Boyd is one of Australia’s most celebrated modernist artists. Working alongside his fellow artist brother, Boyd was following a strong figurative tradition within Melbourne in the mid 20th century. Boyd was part of the Antipodean movement, a group that was created by artists in the quest to forge meaning and representation during a time that abstract expressionism was gaining popularity.
Looking through the lens of a child’s game, ‘King of the Castle’ explores themes of innocence, using swirling lines and highly saturated colours that are signature to Boyd’s work. The warm incandescence of his paintings speaks to nostalgia and fairytales, his depictions of children playing in lush greenery and mythological underpinnings is indicative of his associations with the Heide Circle in Melbourne. Utilising the printing method of collagraphy, this work is imbued with a rich textural quality.
‘King of the Castle’ is an essential addition for collections of Australian modernist art, lovers of prints, and appreciators of the Boyd artistic legacy.
