Godwin Bradbeer’s practice restores the body with mystery. One of the country’s foremost drawing-based artists, his work is existential, ethereal and profound – figures and faces captured in nocturnal tones, charged with enigma.

Blue Boy’, a portrait in silvers and blue, glows. There is something celestial in Bradbeer’s representation – for him, capturing the body is not an academic exercise in representation but rather existential, a visual vessel for the metaphysical. “I am committed to the human figure – that is where my loyalty lies,” he says.

Bradbeer won the Dobell Prize for drawing in 1998 and between 2006 and 2008, a retrospective of his work toured seven regional galleries. His work is held in the collections of National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and Art Gallery of New South Wales. For collectors of mixed-media, contemporary and portrait art, ‘Blue Boy’ is a spellbinding find.
