Ann Brain’s ‘Ploughed Field 2’, an original oil painting, depicts a smooth landscape under a milky blue sky, a cluster of forest bridging the two planes. There is something of Rene Magritte in its mood – a penetrating allure and unease.
Of her work, Brain has reflected that “Art is a mysterious and risky business. I try to look at the world through innocent eyes and paint from the heart, and I hope that people will approach my work with similarly open eyes and minds.” Her landscapes are grounded in an affinity with the natural world, a sensitivity to its oscillation between the benign and unsettling.
A British artist, Brain was born in Coventry and studied art at Coventry University under Terry Frost and Michael Sandle. Settling in Rugby, Rugby Art Gallery and Museum honoured her with a retrospective in 2004 and she has exhibited with the Royal Academy six times.
For collectors of landscapes and surrealism, ‘Ploughed Field 2’ is a fertile find.
