Aileen Brown began printmaking in 1982 when she met famed Australian artist Murray Griffin. Soon, she departed her former career as an occupational therapist to focus on art fulltime – moving from printmaking with a wooden spoon to a sophisticated, process-driven practice.

Brown’s work is tranquil and balanced. She draws on her abundant garden, transcribing flowers, leaves, and birds, black lilies, poppies and camellias. These configurations – elegant and stylish – recall Australia’s lineage of boundary-pushing female printmakers Margaret Preston, Ethel Spowers and Cressida Campbell.

Pink Tulips’ is the bloom that will never wilt. When asked what she looks for in a print, Brown replied “something striking and unforgettable” – something like this linocut. For collectors of prints and female artists, Brown is a compelling find.
