Laura Castell is a contemporary printmaking artist based in Canberra, ACT. Hailing from Venezuela, Castell has lived in Australia for over 30 years, often reflecting on her experiences of migration within her work. Castell came to art later in life. Having originally trained as a biologist, this interest comes through within her artistic focus on natural environments and the human condition.
The 2025 woodcut, ‘Mother and Child’ pictures a mother cradling her newborn, capturing the immediate connection experienced between a mother and child. Printed in black and white, Castell highlights the expressions of her subjects, offering a snapshot of an embrace filled with emotional intimacy. This scene is intricately detailed, highlighting Castell’s skillful command over the printmaking medium and eye for balanced compositions.
Castell’s work features in the collections of several public and private Australian collections. Some notable career highlights include featuring as a 2021 Print Commission Artist Recipient by the Print Council of Australia, winning the Firestation Print Studio Biennial Artist Book Award and being recognised as a finalist in the 2023 Burnie Print Prize.
For collectors of Australian printmaking and lovers of evocative imagery, Castells’ ‘Mother and Child’ is an endearing find.
