Born in Shanghai, China, Ji Chen began his career as a chief set designer for the Beijing Opera Theatre Company of China. He pivoted into fine art after winning a national award with his watercolour, ‘pool’, and in 1989 relocated with his family to Australia.
In Australia, Chen has built a reputation for his sumptuous yet ethereal paintings. The immersive landscape ‘Untitled (Point Break)’ is emblematic of his style, painted with thick, impasto brushstrokes. Each slash evokes an aspect of the borderland between land, sea and sky – mottled grass, rocks, churning waves and a brooding sky. As eminent art historian Sasha Grishin has written, Chen is “an artist for all seasons… an artist of mood and atmosphere”.
Having exhibited across Australia and internationally, Chen is the recipient of numerous art awards including People’s Choice at the Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale International Art Prize in 2002, 2004 and 2006. In 2016 he won People’s Choice at Tattersall’s invitation only 26th Landscape Art Prize. For collectors of contemporary landscapes and impressionism, ‘Untitled (Point Break)’ is a masterful work.
