Paul Compton is an illustrator, artist and print-maker based in Melbourne. Featuring creatures real and imagined, Compton’s work is often fantastical in nature, and through his work he blends aspects of realistic figuration with a sense of the absurd. Compton’s creations are a testament to the artist’s ever-present imagination.
In his 2025 linocut ‘Lovers / Weavers’, Compton explores the idea of interconnectedness. Against a black background, the two imagined animals seemingly float together, becoming increasingly indivisible. Exploring ideas of visual unity, Compton’s weaving creatures leaves the viewer wondering where one body ends and the other begins.
Compton has exhibited at galleries throughout Melbourne, and his works are held in numerous Victorian collections including the Maroondah City Council Art Collection and the Darebin Art Collection. For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those fascinated by fantastical themes, ‘Lovers / Weavers’ is a joyful find.
