Paul Compton is an illustrator, artist and print-maker based in Melbourne. Featuring creatures real and imagined, Compton’s work is often fantastical in nature, and through his work he blends aspects of realistic figuration with a sense of the absurd. Compton’s creations are a testament to the artist’s ever-present imagination.
In his 2016 linocut ‘Regret Eater’, Compton explores the idea of interconnection. Against a black background, the imagined creature twists and turns across the page, feeding into itself. Using this abstracted form, Compton invites the viewer’s own perspective on where the creature’s body begins, and where it ends.
Compton has exhibited at galleries throughout Melbourne, and his works are held in numerous Victorian collections including the Maroondah City Council Art Collection and the Darebin Art Collection. For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those fascinated by fantastical themes, ‘Regret Eater’ is a compelling find.
