Paul Compton is an illustrator, artist and print-maker based in Melbourne. Featuring creatures real and imagined, Compton’s work is often fantastical in nature, and through his work he blends aspects of realistic figuration with a sense of the absurd. Compton’s creations are a testament to the artist’s ever-present imagination.
In his 2025 linocut ‘The Cavern’, Compton creates an image that combines both figurative and abstract visual qualities. While the central figure of the little white lamb stares directly at the viewer, encasing him is a strangely sinister creature. In his signature narrative style, Compton vividly invites the viewer’s interpretation - are those snarling teeth, or simply rock formations?
Compton has exhibited at galleries throughout Melbourne, and his works are held in numerous Victorian collections including the Maroondah City Council Art Collection and the Darebin Art Collection. For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those fascinated by fantastical themes, ‘The Cavern’ is a compelling find.
