Paul Compton is an illustrator, artist and print-maker based in Melbourne. Featuring creatures real and imagined, Compton’s work is often fantastical in nature, and through his work he blends aspects of realistic figuration with a sense of the absurd. Compton’s creations are a testament to the artist’s ever-present imagination.
In his 2020 work ‘Wabbit’, Compton creates an image that vividly invites the interpretation of the viewer. A kind of Rorschach test, ‘Wabbit’ is compelling in its strangely figurative qualities - are those eyes we see, or something more sinister? Using the ‘ghost print’ printing practice, Compton evokes a vintage comic-book quality within this work, a visual technique that enhances the work’s narrative.
Compton has exhibited at galleries throughout Melbourne, and his works are held in numerous Victorian collections including the Maroondah City Council Art Collection and the Darebin Art Collection. For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those fascinated by fantastical themes, ‘Wabbit’ is a compelling find.
