Through the works of Rachel Dun, nature emerges as a continuous source of inspiration. Born in New Zealand and now based in Northern New South Wales, the artist, printmaker and educator draws closely on her local surroundings, using her practice to explore both the spaces she inhabits and her personal relationship to the land. Inspired by the coastal landscapes of Brunswick Heads and the rainforest hinterlands of Byron Bay, Dun’s works translate these environments into evocative studies of place, memory and perception.

Dun’s monoprint ‘New Moon’ presents an abstracted composition in which organic lines and layers of colour appear both familiar and instinctive, drawing on the forms and rhythms of nature. Printed on repurposed sheet music from a Pianola - a self-playing piano - the work carries an inherent sense of rhythm and movement. Lines flow across the surface of the paper, suggesting the forms of roots and leaves without ever fully resolving into recognisable shapes. This tension between suggestion and abstraction gives the work a sense of organic growth, as though the landscape is emerging and receding simultaneously.

Across her career, Dun has exhibited extensively in group exhibitions across Australia and internationally, in Japan and England. She has also been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including the Firestation Print Studio Artist book prize and the Burnie Print Prize, where in 2023 she was highly commended. For collectors fascinated by contemporary printmakers, Dun’s works are an intriguing discovery.
