Despite its simplicity, ‘In the Wings’ is rich with narrative. It captures a girl cradling her doll on a rocking chair, feet suspended and attention elsewhere. Pom-pom tipped slippers lie empty in the foreground, while a whirling dervish tops a table in the background. Eucalyptus foliage spills across the bay windows, a sunlit sage. With admirable refinement, Dunlop evokes the essence of childhood and domesticity. His subject, unaware of our presence, nurses her doll, perhaps listening for her mother’s call. She is surrounded by mementos of Dunlop’s travels to Turkey and the Middle East, yet firmly rooted in coastal Victoria, Australia.
Dunlop once described the interiors in his work as a mind “inhabited by thoughts and objects”. ‘In the Wings’ testifies to this. Flushed with sunlight, it is a dance of juxtapositions - childhood and maternity, the minimal indoors and the textual outdoors, home and the wider world.
‘In the Wings’ will enhance collections of figurative art, interior scenes and important Australian art, as well as our memories of being young and entranced by the simple delights of ordinary life.
