Born in Hawthorn, Melbourne, William Eager was an artist who worked across oil painting, pastels and printmaking. This portrait is a pastel, masterful in its slight use of colour. The subject is composed, gazing into the distance astutely.
Eager was a successful artist. He was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’s Archibald Prize in 1944 and won the Sir Arthur Street Award in 1968. Represented at the National Gallery of Australia and Ian Potter Museum of Art, he is a stellar find for collectors of pastels and early portraiture.
