Joel Elenberg was an Australian artist best known for his sculptural works, which bridged the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation. Drawing inspiration from the Italian masters, Elenberg revived centuries-old techniques and infused them with a distinctly modern sensibility. His personal visual language was shaped by Jungian psychology, formalist art education, and his relationships with fellow artists—most notably, Brett Whiteley.

In this mixed-media work on paper, Elenberg creates the impression of two human hands reaching towards one another, an ovoid form suspended between them. Evocative of Michelangelo’s 'The Creation of Adam', the composition is layered with historically resonant symbolism, touching on themes of creation, life, and the origins of humanity. Though primarily known as a sculptor, this work appears as a preparatory study, offering insight into the artist’s creative process and demonstrating the exceptional draughtsmanship that underpinned his sculptural practice.

Elenberg’s career, cut tragically short at the age of 32, stands as a reminder that artistic achievement is not measured by longevity alone. Today, his work is held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This work serves as both a testament to Elenberg’s remarkable talent and a vivid reflection on the body of work he was yet to create.
