Contemporary Melbourne-based artist Di Ellis is revered for her hand-embroidered textiles and experimental prints, with her works often insightfully exploring the intersections of nature, gender and politics. A graduate of printmaking at RMIT, Ellis’ diverse body of works are sensual and experimental - each piece telling a rich story of contemporary culture and our profound relationships with the natural world.

In ‘Pocket’, Ellis elegantly merges an exploration of costume and womanhood with themes of personal fortification in a patriarchal society. Using a refined combination of decorative botanicals and delicate abstraction, Ellis’ ornate works cleverly re-imagine rich textile histories and observations of nature. Like a memory, the print’s soft quality is familiar, yet faded - a nostalgic impression waiting to be discovered.

With both her printmaking and textile practice, Ellis has exhibited extensively throughout Melbourne. In 2013, another impression of this print was featured in the Print Exchange 'Corporeal', held at Geelong Art Gallery. For enjoyers of textile art and contemporary printmaking, Ellis’ print is certainly an exciting find.
