James Farrar is a Melbourne-based artist and printmaker best known for his large-scale, monochromatic linocut prints. Through his intricately detailed compositions, Farrar constructs deeply imaginative worlds that draw on his personal identity and experiences of being an adopted Korean man in Australia. His works often possess a psychological intensity, transforming elements of memory, belonging and selfhood into richly layered visual narratives.

In 'Veil of Embrace', Farrar presents an intimate scene of two figures held in a tender embrace. The work is rich in the artist’s distinctive visual language, drawing on a recurring lexicon of motifs and characters that appear throughout his practice. Notably, the masks that often obscure the faces of Farrar’s figures are removed here, suggesting a rare moment of vulnerability, intimacy and connection. Rendered through intricate and meticulously carved lines, every detail contributes to the work’s sense of depth and atmosphere, resulting in a composition layered with texture, symbolism and visual intrigue.

Farrar has exhibited in several galleries across Melbourne, including at the 'Bayside Local' show at Bayside Gallery in 2026. In 2023, he was the recipient of a Print Council of Australia Print commission. For those enamoured by large-scale and intricate linocut works, Farrar's prints are a stunning addition to any collection.
