Kevin Foley is an accomplished Australian printmaker and experienced art educator based in regional Victoria. Foley’s practice is deeply contextualised by his life on a small farm near Mia Mia in Central Victoria. Focusing on the reality of rural living, he describes his work as a meditation on his “relationship to the landscape”.

In ‘The crumb thief’, Foley explores the narrative possibilities of the natural world. In this work, the artist evokes a simple yet engaging story: a sharp, black-and-white magpie, poised in fascination beside an antique bowl. With a title that suggests the mischievous nature of this bird, Foley imbues this quintessentially Australian animal with a distinct sense of personality, a reflection on his close relationship with the Australian land.

Foley’s compelling prints feature in both private and public collections, including the Dubbo Regional Gallery and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. For collectors of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those intrigued by authentic glimpses of everyday Australian life, ‘The crumb thief’ is an endearing find.
