Kevin Foley is an accomplished Australian printmaker and experienced art educator based in regional Victoria. Foley’s practice is deeply contextualised by his life on a small farm near Mia Mia in Central Victoria. Focusing on the reality of rural living, he describes his work as a meditation on his “relationship to the landscape”.

In his etching ‘The watcher’, Foley captures a trio of Guinea Fowls in a striking green landscape. With a title that playfully alludes to the intense vigilance of the birds, the artist shows the mischievous personalities of his avian subjects - looking out beyond the frame, something has captured their attention. Wonderfully textured and vibrantly coloured, this work showcases Foley’s skills as a seasoned printmaker, with each feature and blade of grass skillfully detailed.

Foley’s compelling prints feature in both private and public collections, including the Dubbo Regional Gallery and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. For collectors of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those intrigued by authentic glimpses of everyday life, ‘The watcher’ is an endearing find.
