From the ‘Broken House’ suite, David Frazer’s ‘The Shop’ is a portrait of a small-town store. Both enigmatic and melancholic, it draws on themes of rural isolation, urban decline and the mythology of what Henry Lawson once designated the space between “city proper” and “bush”.

Contained in this intricate work are layers of meaning. Under a broad moon, Frazer considers the promise and loss of the suburban Australian dream, finding unexpected poetry in the banal.

Frazer has won numerous awards for his prints, including first prize at the 1st International Print Biennale, the Broken Hill Outback Prize and people’s choice at the Fremantle Print Awards and Banyule Works on Paper Award. In 2007, the ABC produced a documentary on the artist. His work is held across public collections and internationally, at the National Museum of China and the Royal Academy of Art in London.
