Green Eggs and Ham, the Grinch, Horton Hears a Who – the creations of Theodore Geisel, better known by Dr. Suess, are precious to childhoods around the world. Geisel came to his moniker (his mother’s maiden name) after he was caught drinking gin at Dartmouth during prohibition. Banned from the university’s satirical magazine Jack-O-Lantern, he continued to draw there covertly, adopting the name Dr. Seuss.
This official posthumous lithograph, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticty, is an image of nostalgic delight. The Cat in the Hat sprawls mid-yawn across the page, adorned with markings from Geisel’s printing process. Highly collectable, ‘Yawning Cat’ is a portal to whimsy and fancy, a reminder that as the hatted cat knows “It is fun to have fun; But you have to know how.”
Winner of a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, Geisel’s contributions to the popular imagination are immense. His birthday, March 2, is the annual date for National Read Across America Day – a reflection of his commitment to encouraging children to read, no matter their background. For collectors of Dr. Seuss, iconic imagery or young bookworms, ‘Yawning Cat’ is no bore.
