Pasquale Giardino is a rebel in art and life. A founding member of Melbourne's Roar collective, his work deals in the good, the bad and the ugly. Like fellow Roar members David Larwill, Mark Schaller and Sarah Faulkner's work, Giardino is counter-culture, visceral and always captivating.

In this work, he envisions a man battling a leopard. The scene is mythological, made more dramatic by the use of a monochrome linocut technique. Who will win in this spar between man and beast? Represented at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Giardino is an idiosyncratic yet vital figure of Australian art.

A child of punk, Giardino and his fellow Roar comrades yanked art back into the frontline of life.
