Jackie Gorring creates from curiosity. Her work, moving between printmaking and sculpture, is inspired by the places she has been, people she has met, flora and fauna, and the media she engages with. Text appears, gleaned from overhead conversations, her subject matter or the references she draws upon. Gorring’s work contains a fervent energy, speaking to the way she sees the world around her.
Gorring’s 2025 relief print, “Floyd,” features a dog’s grinning face, with the name “Floyd” written on the lower half of the composition. This print is rich with energy, creating a sense of movement through the overlapping dots of colour spread across the work. “Floyd” relates to a feeling of childlike optimism, similar to the joyful outlook of man’s best friend. This print filters an everyday moment through Gorring’s signature style, connecting to her ongoing interest in the ‘joie de vivre.’
Gorring’s work spans a lifetime of practice, reflecting her sense of humour and vibrant outlook on life. She has featured in over 80 exhibitions over the course of her career. Gorring’s works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Canberra Museum and Art Gallery and the Print Council of Australia.
For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, Gorring’s “Floyd” is a compelling find.
