Jackie Gorring creates from curiosity. Her work, moving between printmaking and sculpture, is inspired by the places she has been, people she has met, flora and fauna, and the media she engages with. Text appears, gleaned from overhead conversations, her subject matter or the references she draws upon. Gorring’s work contains a fervent energy, speaking to the way she sees the world around her.

Gorring’s 2023 relief print, “Taffy,” features a sketch-like image of a dog overlaid with real fluff to resemble fur. This mixed media work uses a minimal palette of earth tones to emphasise the movement captured by Gorring’s printmaking style. As characteristic of her practice, her subject matter is combined with an abstract background of gestural brushstrokes. As a result, this print evokes a tone of whimsy, emphasised by Gorring’s incorporation of recycled materials.

Gorring’s work spans a lifetime of practice, reflecting her sense of humour and vibrant outlook on life. She has featured in over 80 exhibitions over the course of her career. Gorring’s works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Canberra Museum and Art Gallery and the Print Council of Australia.

For lovers of contemporary Australian printmaking, Gorring’s “Taffy” is a charming find.
