Don’t be fooled by the tranquil stoicism of this beautiful bird - when encountered in the wild, these boisterous parrots are usually heard before they are seen.
‘Nestor Hypopolius’, better known as the Kākā parrot, is a native of New Zealand and was captured on paper for perhaps the first time by famed English ornithologist John Gould.
First published within the monumental seven volume series ‘The Birds of Australia (and the Surrounding Islands)’, Gould and his wife Elizabeth are together credited in the inscription of this lithograph, as “Drawn from Nature & on Stone by J & E Gould”, positioning this print in the small window between the couple’s return from their Australian research trip and the death of Elizabeth following the birth of their daughter in 1841.
Works from this same series were the chosen decorative scheme by then Prime Minister Paul Keating when the Cabinet Room was redecorated in 1993 - proof of the enduring qualities to be found in these prints. The lasting record of an inspiring artistic collaboration between two pioneering figures in botanical art, ‘Nestor Hypopolius’ is sure to be a charming and lively companion in any space.
