Anne Marie Hall’s Five Footed Lithograph is a striking portrait. “Footed” by subject rather than size, it depicts a contorted figure with more feet than reason allows. Perhaps a self-portrait, the figure writhes before the viewer like a live wire or a star mid-combustion. Where portraiture often leans toward reserve, Hall’s work crackles with energy, recalling the pressure—and the desire—to perform.
Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in a largely male-dominated space. Now represented in the National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum, and Geelong Gallery, her absence in the canon is gradually being redressed.
This original lithograph is a rarity in Hall’s oeuvre. It survives in weathered condition and would benefit from conservation; the images provided outline its state. For collectors of Modernist Australian art—and those seeking a rare insight into the Antipodean movement—this is a work to move on swiftly, before it tiptoes away.
