In ‘Girl in a Twirl’, Anne Marie Hall paints with an intense magnetism. Her subject, a girl with periwinkle blue eyes, is suspended in a swirl of plum, pink and purple. She is a comet, a double helix and a dancer, hurtling from embryo to girlhood. Movement, beauty and energy reign.

Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling voice in an otherwise male dominated field. That her career was at times overshadowed by her marriage to artist John Perceval is a testament to the era’s issues with gender parity. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence is being redressed.

For collectors of modern art and female artists, ‘Girl in a Twirl’ is a treat.
