The subject of ‘In A Throne’ is likely Anne Marie Halls former husband, the Australian artist John Perceval. They met in 1967 and married in 1972, Perceval both a star of the art scene and troubled figure, battling alcoholism before entering Larundel Psychiatric Hospital in 1974.

In this work, he pictured sitting in the living room in the midst of conversation. With a brilliant eye for colour and form, Hall captures his charisma – its gleam and edge. Her portraits of Perceval represent some of the most incisive, reflecting their intimate relationship and the acuity of her eye. From the echelons of Australian art, Hall brings Perceval to an emotional and domestic reality.

Collected by the National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, Hall represents a fascinating and fertile perspective into Australian modernism.
