In ‘Larundel Dove’, Anne Marie Hall draws a dove mid-flight. In a flurry of movement, the dove appears somewhat abstracted – three wings feathered by grey lines. It was drawn in 1979 on a visit to Larundel Mental Asylum where Hall’s then husband, Australian artist John Perceval, was committed between 1974 and 1986.

Despite its peaceful subject, ‘Larundel Dove’ represents an oblique trace of a complex moment in Hall’s and Melbourne’s history. Situated on the city’s outskirts, Larundel opened in 1953 and closed in 1999. The building still stands, covered in graffiti, abandoned and rumoured to be haunted. The popular imagining of asylums does not always capture their complexity, turning what were oppressive institutions into spectacles.

This work, from an artist represented at the National Gallery of Australia, speaks to Australia and Hall’s history – a symbol of peace from a place and relationship not associated with serenity. For collectors of modern art and female artists, ‘Larundel Dove’ promises unexpected intrigue.
