In Anne Marie Hall’s ‘Leaning’, a near abstract figure falls across the page. Hall resists realism, forging a figure whose anatomy is suggested, her face suspended in open space. Despite the work’s minimalism, it remains poignant, evoking transition, rest and contemplation.

Alongside fellow modernists Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling voice in an otherwise male dominated crowd. She has been collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and the Geelong Gallery, representing a unique and collectable perspective into Australian modernism. For collectors of mid-century art and female artists, ‘Leaning’ is a remarkably beautiful find.
