Anne Marie Hall’s ‘Poppies’ is a work of exquisite beauty. In ink and watercolour, Hall paints red and orange flowers crooning from a vase. They are all frilly petals and yellow eyes, her use of watercolour creating a velveteen texture. In the background lie the traces of more flowers, left gossamer under Hall’s hand.
Alongside fellow modernists Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling voice in an otherwise male dominated crowd. She has been collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and the Geelong Gallery, representing a unique, collectable and compelling perspective of Australian modernism. For collectors of mid-century art, female artists and still lifes, this watercolour is a beautiful find.
