Anne Marie Hall looks out from ‘Self Portrait’. Her depiction is minimal but for the eyes – large, elliptic and ringed red, affixed on some unknown horizon. Painted in 1967, this work captures Hall at twenty-two, the year she drifted into the orbit of John Perceval – a highly successful artist twice her age and her future husband. She was on the cusp of her first exhibition at South Yarra Gallery.

Anybody who has been twenty-two will recognise ‘Self Portrait’. At the threshold of her future, Hall is cool – styled as an adult, but not yet beyond the self-consciousness of adolescence. Beneath her blonde fringe, precociousness has not curled into knowing.

Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in an otherwise male dominated field. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence in the canon of Australian art is being redressed. For collectors of modern art, female artists and anyone who has been twenty-two, ‘Self Portrait’ is a spellbinding find.
