In ‘Slip Slip Knit’, Anne Marie Hall paints a figure knitting. She wears distinctly 1970s garb – a pink blouse, green skirt and striped platforms. In her typical style, Hall breathes energy and character into her subject who is captured mid yarn, her literal yarn bounding towards the floor.
Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in an otherwise male dominated field. That her career was at times overshadowed by her marriage to artist John Perceval is a testament to the era’s issues with gender parity. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence is being redressed.
‘Slip Slip Knit’ is a beautifully rendered work, a vibrant addition to collections of portraits, modernist art and female artists.
