In ‘Untitled (Chickens)’, Anne Marie Hall sketches a brood of chickens. They cluster in negative space, all plump bodies and black eyes. Yet, they are not without personality – each chicken diligently absorbed in their immediate surroundings, caught unaware by the artist’s presence.
Whether lovers, friends, animals or a still life, Hall’s perspective is infused with insight and mystery. In works like this, there are flickers of fondness and humour, a sense that the world teeters between order and absurdity.
Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in the otherwise male Australian modernist movement. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum, Geelong Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria, her absence in the canon of Australian art is being redressed. For collectors of modern art, female artists or images of animals, ‘Untitled (Chickens)’ is top of the pecking order.
