Anne Marie Hall’s ‘Untitled (Karate)’ is a portrait of a figure in a karate uniform. He is no Karate Kid, depicted instead with a twinge of awkwardness – purplish toes and fingers, eyes darting to the side. Hall has a talent for capturing the essence of her subjects, sensing what lies beneath the costumes we don everyday. Despite his black belt, Hall strikes effortlessly to the core of her karate companion.
Alongside fellow modernists Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling voice in an otherwise male dominated crowd. She has been collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and the Geelong Gallery, representing a unique and collectable perspective into Australian modernism.
For collectors of mid-century art and female artists, ‘Untitled (Karate)’ is an offering of character and charm. Strike fast.
